In our final newsletter for the year we'd like to give you some updates as well as highlight the work undertaken by our phenomenal Drivetrain team!
We had our monthly team meeting this Tuesday before the Christmas break to review the progress so far. This day marked the completion of our design phase & we will be making steady progress into the production very soon after the Design presentation in January 2018
3D Connexxion have given us a specialised computer mouse for all our 3D modelling! We're glad to say that many of our designers are quite happy using them for design work of the submarine.

The WASUB 8 will also contain a counterrotating propulsion system. Since we are also competing for the world speed record for single manned submarines, a model has been made which can serve as a tool for determining the best gear and pitch ratio. This can eventually lead to the highest velocity after 48.5 meters (which is the track length before the submarine hits the timing gates). Also during the test phase, the model can be used to determine at which time the efficiency of the propeller is at it’s peak, so the the pilot knows exactly when he has to use his full potential. Furthermore the drivetrain has also been modified by implementing a telescopic cardanshaft using universal joints on both ends- small misalignment errors can be compensated which may benefit the efficiency in comparison with the chain drive from the previous teams. Since the frame structure for structural rigidity will increase the overall weight of the submarine, all of the drivetrain systems including the coaxial gear and the bevel gear are reduced significantly in size and weights.
Hope you liked our newsletter this month!
Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a happy new year! We look forward to corresponding with you soon!
